A quiet, hard working man who took pride in his home. He always kept a large manicured lawn and many flowers in the days before power equipment, fertilizer, insecticide and herbicides. Some of my childhood memories of him include "running" his fox hounds, named Rock and Stone. This practice consisted of sitting around a campfire in the woods at night, with a few of his friends, and listening to the dogs as they chased after a fox. The object of this was not for the dogs to actually catch the fox (which to my knowledge they never did) but just to listen to the dogs as they ran following the scent of the fox. The men could identify their particular dogs by their voices as they bayed. "That's Rock that picked up the scent. They're over by Cemetery Ridge". At the end of the chase they would call in their dogs by blowing on a homemade horn made from a cows horn. This may not be very exciting, or to make much sense in todays world, but as a child I enjoyed the time spent with him and his friends, as we sat around the campfire listening to the old mens tales of ghost and "haints" and the other stories that they told to my cousin and I. Times were much different 60 years ago, and in some ways much better than today.
My maternal Grandfather.
