Spencer and his wife Caroline Ann Thomas were married on 7 March 1859 in Hanover, Muskingum County, Ohio. They remained in Ohio during the Civil War where 6 of their 9 children were born. By 1870 they were in Osage, Missouri (according to the 1870 Census) and then in Metz, Vernon County, Missouri by 1880. Two children were born in Missouri during the 10 years or so that they lived there. By 1883 they were in Golinda, Falls County, Texas and their youngest child was born there.
While in Ohio and Missouri, Spencer was a potter and a carpenter by trade; in Texas he pursued farming.
