Bruce was stricken in recent years with a leg amputation and blindness, but his loving heart, great sense of humor, and athletic enthusiasm confounded everyone around him. His integrity, brilliance, ingenuity and strength were only outmatched by his kindness and love for life. He was a positive influence to everyone he ever met.
He was a World War II veteran, served in the Guadalcanal campaign. He was a pilot and navigator, and he received the Distinguished Flying Cross medal. Bruce graduated from Southern Methodist University Engineering School in 1950; he held several NCAA punting records. He was a registered engineer/inventor with over 200 patents to his credit. Bruce worked throughout the world for companies such as General Dynamics, Well Ex Jet Services, Baker Hughes, and Rocketdyne until he created his own firm, The Gilbert Engineering Firm. He then retired with his loving wife to La Jolla, Calif., in 1992. Bruce was a member of the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, Colonial Country Club, Preston Hills Racquet Club, and Brownwood Country Club, and he was a lifelong Methodist and Rotarian.
Survivors: His wife of 63 years, Betty Gilbert; his children, Bruce M. Gilbert and wife, Peggy Gilbert, and Laura Gilbert and husband, Tim Karpf; his sister, Ann Elliott; his grandchildren, Wendi Poer, Glenn Gribble, Janet Divin, Megan Suarez and Al Suarez; and a host of nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.
