O Father dear, we grieve to know
That we must say goodbye,
To know that we no more may feel
Thy presence day by day.
Now thou art gone; we feel alone
No more thy pleasant face,
Though mother, sisters, brothers stay,
There's none can take thy place.
Though other ties around us bind
Though friends are kind and true
O Father, dear, we can't forget
How much we lost in you.
Within our home, fond memories
We ever more can trace,
And from our minds, sweet thoughts of thee
We never can efface.
Farewell beloved one; now set free
From suffering and pain,
We must not murmur, since our loss,
Has been our Father's gain. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, Iowa; December 18, 1929)
