James was the second of Woodward Woodson & Stacy Ada (Adkisson) Altgelt's three children. His older brother was Woodward, Jr. & younger sister, Frances Ann.

After graduating from the Texas Military Institute, James served in the USAF during WWII. His brother, Woodward, was an officer in the Army. The following articles, from the San Antonia Light, provided a brief glimpse of this time:

Dec. 23, 1942
"Mr. and Mrs. Woodward Altgelt will have their sons with them this Christmas. Lieut, and. Mrs. Woodward Altgelt Jr. will arrive from Camp Maxie, Paris, Thursday evening for several days. Lieut. James Ernest Altgelt also will arrive Thursday from Camp Welters, Mineral Wells."

May 2, 1945
"Second Lieut. James E. Altgelt son of Mr. and Mrs. Woodward W Altgelt, 107 West Mistletoe avenue promoted to first lieutenant in England, where he Is serving as a Flying Fortress bombardier."

"LIEUT. JAMES E. ALTGELT
Awarded the 384th Bombardment group, Eighth Air force. He is a graduate of Texas Military institute and former student of the University of Texas."

James had completed 30 missions by the time the following article was printed.

The return of service men from the European theater of operations is resulting in many happy family reunions.
Capt Woodward Altgelt Jr. is among the latest arrivals,having reached Fort Worth Tuesday. He was welcomed there by his wife and baby son. Woodward III, his parents, brother and sister, Mr.and Mrs. W.W. Altgelt, Lt. James Altgelt, who returned from foreign service two weeks ago after completing 30 missions, and Miss Frances Ann Altgelt. They left here on Monday night to meet Capt. Altgelt on his arrival there. Capt. Altgelt has been on overseas duty with the 102nd Ozark Division, under General Frank A. Keating, 9th Army, since last September."

An excerpt from the San Antonio Express newspaper on Sunday, May 31, 1950, announcing his engagement to Jean Elizabeth Rowan provides a brief glimpse into his accomplishments at that time. "The bridegroom was graduated from Texas Military Institute, attended the University of Texas for his premedical work and will receive his M.D. degree next year from Tulane Medical School, New Orleans. He is a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Nu Sigma Nu Medical Fraternity. He served three years with the 8th Air Force and completed his missions a 1st Lieutenant in the E.T.O."

James & Jean were married in Fort Worth, TX on June 30, 1950. A description of their wedding from the San Antonia Express on Sunday, July 2, 1950, follows:

Rowanoaks, the home of the bride's parents, was the scene Friday evening for the marriage of Miss Jean Elizabeth Rowan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arch H. Rowan of Fort Worth, and James Ernest Altgelt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Woodward W. Algelt of this city.

Vows were exchanged before a huckleberry screen in the garden with Dr. Granville T. Walker officiating. Nuptial music was provided by a mixed quartet led by Arthur Paguy-Cota and by Mrs. Oliver Q'Zella Jeffus, organist.

Miss Sue Rowan attended her sister as maid of honor, and Mrs. Elton M. Hyder, Jr., cousin of the bride, served as matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Miss Frances Altgelt, sister of the bridegroom, and Mrs. W.W. Altgelt, Jr., his sister-in-law. Miss Brenda Brants of Fort Worth, cousin of the bride, was junior bridesmaid.

Attending the bridegroom as best man was Ralph Cameron of San Antonio. Groomsmen were Arch Rowan, brother of the bride, W.W. Altgelt, Jr., brother of the bridegroom, and Franklin Gilliam of San Antonio.

The bridal gown was of white nylon net accented with bands of Chantilly lace and clusters of white lilacs. Her fingertip veil cascaded from a diamond-shaped cap covered in matching white lilac motif. She carried white orchids and lilies of the valley.

A reception followed in the West garden at Rowanoaks. After a wedding trip to Houston, the couple will live in New Orleans.

The bride is a graduate of the University of Texas, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Mr. Altgelt attended the University of Texas, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and Tulane University, where he was affiliated with Nu Sigma Nu. He served with the Eight Air Force in the European theater.

He is also welcomed by his sister, Mary Susan, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A.H. Rowan, Ft. Worth, and Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Altgelt. Mrs. Rowan, who had been visiting in New York city, arrived here Sunday by plane to see her new grandson."

James's marriage to Jean ended when they were divorced on June 23, 1969.
