HOLDREGE -- Norma Esther James, 85, died Friday (Sept. 10, 2004) at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Holdrege.

She was born Aug. 23, 1919, to Chester and Wanda (Catt) McConnell in Wilsonville. She attend rural school south of Wilsonville.

In March of 1936, she married Henry Railsbeck Sr. The couple lived in the Wilsonville area. They later divorced.

On Dec. 20, 1947, she married Glen V. James in Beaver City. They made their home east of Hendley, where they farmed until 1966 until they moved to Arapahoe. They purchased a restaurant and tavern in Arapahoe called "James Recreation." She also worked as a cook for Thompson Cafe in Arapahoe and the Ole Panhandler in Beaver City. She retired in 1982.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hendley and the Legion Auxiliary of Arapahoe.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Henry Railsbeck Jr.; sister, Nova Potts; and brother, Harold "Bud" McConnell.

Survivors include husband, Glen V. James of Arapahoe; three sons, Melvin and wife, Sharon James of Axtell, Merlin James of Arapahoe and Mike James of Arapahoe; four daughters, Dona and husband, Paul Laverak of Funk, Roberta Upson of Waseca, Minn., Kathy and husband, Mark Graf of Arapahoe and Polly and husband, Monte Clay of Holdrege; 13 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Services are Tuesday, 10 a.m., at First United Methodist Church of Arapahoe with the Rev. R.L. Malchow officiating. Interment will be in Hendley Cemetery.

Visitation is today until 8 p.m., at Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe.

Wenburg Funeral Home of Arapahoe is in charge of the arrangements.
