Herbert was born and raised on his family's farm on Webster Rd. just north of Freeland in Tittabawasee Twp in Saginaw Co.

Herbert married Hazel Goold on November 4, 1911 in Freeland. Hazel's family lived around the corner on Buck Rd.. They purchased a farm from Hazel's father Charles Goold on Webster Rd. in Freeland. Herb farmed in the Freeland area growing mostly corn, white beans, sugar beets and oats. He also worked for the Saginaw County Road Commission driving road graters and plowing snow. Before he got his job with the SRC he worked in the fall of the year at the Sugar Beat Factory in Bay City.

During the depression Herb and Hazel fell behind on the mortgage of their Webster Rd. farm and Hazel's father took the farm back and sold it. They then purchased a house in Freeland at 147 South 4th St.

Herb died at St. Lukes Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan after a lingering illness.
