US Congressman. He served in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War, rising the rank of Colonel. After the United States Constitution was ratified in 1789, he was among the ten Virginians to be elected to the First Congress, and served as an At-Large Representative from Virginia in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1789 to 1791. He was later elected to represent Virginia's 6th Congressional District, serving from 1783 to 1787. His cousin was Virginia patriot Patrick Henry, and his son, Walter Coles, served as a Congressman in the 1840s.
