John E. "Jack" Higgins, 80, of St. Paul died Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at the Nebraska Veteran's Home in Grand Island, Nebraska. Jack Higgins was born September 18, 1929 in Summer, Nebraska to John and Maud (Glines) Higgins.

The flag will be presented to the family at the church by the Nebraska Military Honor Guard and Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul, Nebraska.

Jack was raised in the Ord area, moving to Wolbach to live with an aunt and uncle after the death of his mother.

Jack entered the United States Air Force on January 9, 1951, serving in Korea. He received his discharge on August 4, 1954.

He attended Southeast Community College, graduating with a degree in diesel technology.

Jack was united in marriage to Peggy Nealon on August 20, 1955 at O'Connor, NE. The couple lived in Grand Island for 34 years. He worked as a mechanic, then as a power plant operator and superintendent.

He enjoyed reading, playing cards and working with his farm tractors. For a number of years, Jack served as a volunteer for the National Weather Service as an official weather observer. Jack was a licensed amateur radio operator with the call sign KA0CPO.

He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119, both of St. Paul. He was a past commander of the former VFW of St. Paul. He was also a member of the Platte-Duetsche Society of Grand Island.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Cheryl Higgins of Columbus, Shane and Darlene Higgins of Grand Island and Edward and Judi Higgins of Rochester, MN; two daughters, Peggy Higgins-Splattstoesser of Grand Island and Dewan Everhart of Ellsworth, IA; 19 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a special friend, Pearl Jensen; and three sisters and a brother-in-law, Deloris Chipps of Black Canyon City, AZ, Mary Jane Siaz of Fairfield, CA and Lola Mae (Trosper) and Kent Wassung of Lincoln; a sister-in-law, Reba Higgins of Hopkins, SC; and two half brothers, Ernie and James Higgins of Yakima, WA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Peggy on March 11, 2007; an infant son, John Michael Higgins; and two brothers, Leo and Ruel Higgins; and one sister, Lavina McAndrews.
