In 1922, Lee was born in Denver, CO to David and Jacquelyn Nickell. Both parents were from pioneer homesteading families in the Twisp, WA area. When Lee was five years old, the family moved to Wenatchee for a few months and then north to Pateros, where they had a grocery store and fruit orchard. In 1941, Lee graduated from Pateros High School, where he enjoyed participating in sports. After high school he journeyed north to Fairbanks, AK and he worked on the airport runway, where wooden "planes" were parked to deceive the enemy into thinking the U.S. had a fighter squadron ready to fight. Early in 1943, he became part of that large group of Pateros young men, who served their country during WWII. While at Fort Ord he played basketball on the Army team. He went on to serve in both the European and Pacific theaters, returning home to Pateros from the Philippines. Lee began growing apples for a living and played "town team" baseball and basketball. He enjoyed sports, camping, and fishing, as well as being an avid rose and vegetable gardener. He took great joy in sharing from his fruit trees, rose and vegetable gardens.

Lee is survived by his wife of 62 years of marriage, Elaine. They have four children, Jacque, Nancy, Paul and Alice; ten grandchildren, David, Ben, Kyle, Evie, Anna, Brandon, Melissa, Ashley, Emily and Connie; and three great-grandchildren, Austin, Emma and Hannah. Jack Nickell is Lee's only surviving sibling; his brother, Frank and sister, Widde (Johnson) preceded him in death.

On December 30, 2009, at 10:00 a.m., we will Celebrate and Honor Lee at the Pateros Church of Christ, followed by Interment at the Pateros Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Lee and his family ask you to consider a gift to: Portales Christian Children's Home, 356 NM Hwy. 236, Portales, NM 88130.
