Thomas was married to Mary Coburn and settled on land given to him by his father near West Milford. Some historians say that Thomas was killed by Indians, others say he died after undergoing surgery without anesthetic for appendicitis. Thomas and Mary were the parents of Jesse, Elias, Robert and Mary (Polly) Lowther. His siblings were Robert, William, Jesse and Elias.
