2nd Lieutenant William D. Rea enlisted in the 1st NC Infantry in May of 1861 as a Private. In early 1862 the 1st NC was reorganized into the 11th NC Infantry where William D. Rea was transferred and promoted to Sergeant. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on November 25th 1862. He became the Company Commander in early 1864. He was wounded twice, onece he was shot in the hip and foot at the battle of Gettysburg PA and the other he was wounded by shrapnel to the face during the battle of Weldon Railroad just outside of Petersburg VA. He was medically retired in February of 1865. Post war he was the Lieutenant Commander of the Pettigrew Camp 1315 United Confederate Veterans in Edenton NC.
