James Taggart Marquis, aged 85, one of the most prominent residents of Jefferson township, Washington county, Pa., died Tuesday evening in the family home near Burgettstown. His death was due to an attack of pneumonia, with which he was stricken two weeks ago.
Mr. Marquis was born and lived his entire life on the farm on which he died. His father, John Marquis, a soldier in the war of 1812, settled on the farm near Burgettstown at the close of that war.
Mr. Marquis was married on January 31, 1861, to Mary C. Bucher, and they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary last January.
All his life he was very active and attended to the duties of his farm until stricken with his last illness.
For more than 30 years he was a ruling elder in the Cross Creek Presbyterian Church.
He leaves his widow and five children:
The Rev. John A. Marquis, president of Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Ia., formerly pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Greensburg, Pa., the First Presbyterian Church of Beaver, Pa., and the associate editor of the Presbyterian Banner of this city;
Dr. L. V. Marquis, a dentist of Aspinwall;
Mrs. Charles F. Hubbard, formerly a teacher in the Central High School of Pittsburgh, president of the Albert Lea College for Women, and now of Gunnison, Col.;
Mrs. William H. Brooks of Jamesburg, N. Y., and
Mrs. E. S. McClelland of Desloge, Mo.
