He achieved all-Midwestern Collegiate Conference honors and Academic All-American recognition as a member of the Huskies' baseball team, and concluded his collegiate career as the school's leader in several football statistics as a placekicker and punter. For five seasons (1973 to 1977), he played at the punter position in the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers. He was chosen by San Francisco during the 8th round of the 1972 NFL Draft and appeared in 70 career games, recording 380 punts for 15,494 yards, with a 40.8 average. He achieved both All-Pro and Pro Bowl status twice (1973 and 1974). Following his football career, he was a teacher and coach for 30 years in Illinois.
