George Ridgley (47131934)

Suggested edit: George W Ridgley was born October 13, 1850 to Alfred and Elizabeth Inyart Ridgley in Lukin Township, Lawrence County, IL. according to information provided by him on his marriage application. The 1860 census found George, listed as 9 years old, living in Lukin with his father, Alfred, who had recently lost his young wife, Mary Isabelle.
George married Mary Isabelle Handley in Richland County, IL on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1873. By 1880, they had made their home on a Lukin Township farm and were the parents of two sons, 3- year- old James D. and 1- year- old Charles Henry. Family members indicate their first son, Robert Wesley, born in 1875, died in 1876, and was buried at Ridgley. Another son, Alfred Newton, was born on September 23, 1880, and died on December 29, 1882. He was also buried in the Ridgley family cemetery. Two daughters were born, Fannie Evaline in 1884 and Sarah Jane in 1888, as shown as stepdaughters of Almeda Ridgley on the 1900 census.
George's wife Mary died on March 14, 1890 leaving him with small children to raise; he married Almeda Fite on July 19, 1890. George died a month later, on August 19, 1890 and was buried in the Ridgley family cemetery.
A single tombstone marks the graves of George W, Mary Isabella and Almeda Ridgley. The inscription "Sweet Be Thy Rest" is from a hymn by F E Belden.
