Johnson - After some months of failing health from dropsy, Mr. John Evert died last Thursday evening. He was a patient sufferer, enduring with great strength and fortitude when the end came to the sufferer.
Mr. Evert was a native of Germany, born in 1844, coming to America with his parents when about eight years old, and settling at Napoleon, Ohio. As the Civil War came on, he, then a very young man, entered the Union Army, serving with the Ninth Ohio cavalry, and proved himself an admirable soldier that he was through life. He was married twice. To the first union four children came, two sons and two daughters. To the last union there were no children, and the wife that survives him was by maiden name, Miss Jenny Sechrist of Cincinnati, Ohio. They came to Florida in 1908 and settled at Johnson, purchasing a place here and have since endeavored to make their little home beautiful and attractive in many ways.
Mr. Evert was a lover of the beautiful in flowers and foliage. He was a carpenter of no small ability, and there are few homes or public buildings around the village but shows some of his handiwork.
The remains were interred here in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery, of which church he was a member. (Times-Herald Obituary dtd Friday, 26 Oct 1917.)
