Marion was raised and educated in Silver City, IA. He graduated in 1940 with a class of nine students from Silver City High School.
Following graduation, Marion enlisted in the U.S. Navy on August 1, 1941. He was a veteran of the Pacific, being a member of the USS Hornet which was sunk in the Pacific. Marion survived three days in the water and being wounded in the leg. He received the Purple Heart Medal and was discharged on December 26, 1946. Following his discharge, he enlisted in the Navy Reserves till 1948.
On September 20, 1948, Marion was united in marriage to Joann S. Tucker in Glenwood, IA. To this union two sons were born: Michael and Mark. The family made their home in Glenwood and Marion worked for Wilbur Nielsen Construction. The family moved to Kansas for a short time then to Onawa, IA and in 1961 to Whiting, IA. After Marion retired from Wilbur Nielsen Construction, he began working for Aage Neldeberg till he was in his 80's.
Marion enjoyed race cars, caring for animals especially his dogs, and watching racing and sports on television. He will be remembered as a hard worker and striving to be the best mechanic.
Marion was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joann on April 23, 2008; and two sisters: Barbara Adams and Neomi Decker.
Grateful for having shared his life are his two sons: Michael Chapman and wife Milly of Humboldt, IA and Mark Chapman and wife Glenda of Sgt. Bluff, IA; five grandchildren: Ryan Chapman and wife Shawna of Whiting, IA, Joe Chapman and wife Jennifer of Sloan, IA, Josh Chapman and wife Kelsey of Sloan, IA, Shawnene Lougue and husband Abdina of Arizona and Charity Chapman of Ankeny, IA; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Rogene Johnson and husband Edward of Lincoln, NE; three brothers-in-law: Keith Tucker and wife Barb of Glenwood, IA, Larry Tucker and wife Margaret of Council Bluffs, IA, and Garry Tucker and wife Kathy of Hornick, IA; one sister-in-law, Marjorie Holt of Jacksonville, FL; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
