Decatur Herald 8/29/1923

Joseph R. Hockaday for almost 70 years a resident of Macon county died Monday in his home near Emery, after a period of ill health which extended over several months. Heart trouble was the cause of his death.
Joseph R..Hockaday was known not only because of his many years in Macon county, but because of his high qualities as a man. His parents came to Illinois prior to the Civil war when there remained unfinished some of the early settler work. While the actual pioneering had been done the country lacked much in development and he had full share in that work for many years.
Joseph Hockaday son of Mr.and Mrs.Benjamin Bates Hockaday was born in Mt.Pleasant,Ohio,Dec.24,1847 and with his parents came to Illinois in 1856, the family going at once to the farm where since he has made his home and where his death occurred. He leaves his wife who was Ida Cirley of Emerson,Ohio and one son by fomer marriage,Roy M. Hockaday of Decatur.
Funeral services will be conducted in the family home Thursday afternoon at 2 oclock. The funeral will be in Greenwood.
