Decatur Herald 8/21/1921

Benjamin Hockaday, a pioneer in Macon County, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.W. Parlier, near Emery, on Friday morning at 9:15. He was 88 years of age. Death was due to the infirmities of age.
Mr. Hockaday was born in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, on November 10, 1832. He came to Illinois in the fall of 1856 and settled on a farm near Emery, where he spent the greater part of his life. He erected the first house between the hickory point timber and Maroa. He also broke the track for the Bloomington road in the spring of 1857 by piloting a large circus from Bloomington to Decatur following the township line to the best of his ability. The trail had previously been cross country.
For a number of years, Mr. Hockaday was postmaster in Emery. He was one of the community leaders and was active in church as a young man. He was a charter member of the Forsyth lodge, I.O.O.F. and has been a Mason for 67 years, first joining in Mt. Pleasant then later transferring to Maroa. He retired from active life eight years ago and had since made his home with his daughter, Mrs. J.W. Parlier.
He was married to Miss Sophia Lehman on April 4, 1865. His wife died July 26, 1876. He leaves the following children: Mrs. J.W. Parlier near Emery, Henry T. Hockaday of Forsyth, and Charles F. Hockaday of Decatur. He also leaves 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and a brother, J.H. Hockaday of Emery. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
