Peter A. Hoffman a well known former resident of Decatur died at 10 oclock Monday morning at the family home in Riverside Cal. His death was caused by arterlar scicrosis. He had been in poor health for a year and had been confined to his bed for seven weeks. The message received by his son Benjamin Hoffman of Decatur gave no particulars. The body will be brought to Decatur for burial
Mr. Hoffman was sixty three years old. He made his home in Decatur for forty nine years and during most of that time he was employed as a salesman at the Morehouse & Wells store. He was one of the best known men in the city for many years. He moved to Riverside Cal. about eight years ago.
Mr. Hoffman was born in Baden German, July 13, 1848. With his parents he came to America when he was about six years old. The family located in Decatur. He attended the schools which were then maintained by the popular subscripton until he was fifteen years old. Then in spite of parental objections he went to war. He had a hard time trying to enlist. The recruiting officer advising him to remain at home owing to his youth. He was determined to go however so he was finally enlisted as a private in the company I of the Seventh Illinois Calvary on Dec 9 1863 and was mustered into the service Jan 19 1864. He served with that regiment until the close of the war participating in all the major battles and skirmishes in which his regiment was engaged. The most important battle in his unit in which he took part were these of ?Frannklin and Nashville. After the war he returned to Decatur and made this city his home until eight years ago when he moved to California. He was the youngest member of Dunham post No 141, G. A.R.He was a member of the First Methodist church and also of ?Lodge No 1 A. F. & A. M. and De? Camp # 144 M. W. of A.
He is survived by his wife and six children, Benjamin of Decatur, Mrs. Celeste McCool of Philadelphia, Mrs.Amy A. Rehart, Miss Ruth Hoffman, Ira Hoffman of Riverside California and three other children have died.
