Johnathan and his parents moved to Texas in 1847 and settled first in Grayson County. They moved to Falls County and then to Young County, near Fort Belknap. He was of Scotch-Irish descent. His father, Johnathan Dobbs was from Kentucky and fought in the War of 1812. His mother, Nancy Barnard came from Alabama. She had some Cherokee blood in her ancestry.
