She is immigrated to the US on 2 May 1854 from Germany and headed to Freeport, Illinois. This is where she met and married Frederick Althof the son of Louis and Mary Althof from Northern Germany in Oct of 1854 in Freeport, Illinois. In 1864 They purchased 140 acres in Jo Daviess County, Illinois. Her husband had a sucessful farming career. He and Sophia had six sons and three daughters: Frederick, August, Henry, Charles, Albert, Otto, Sophia, Fredricka "Reke" and Anna.
