Services Pending For G.W. Tucker, Newlin Resident

Funeral services are pending today for George Washington Tucker, 79, prominent and long-time resident of Newlin, who died suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jack Garrett, 604 Pierce St., in Amarillo Wednesday afternoon.

Tucker was visiting his daughter at the time of his death. The body was returned to Memphis late Wednesday and services will be under the direction of Marcum Funeral Directors.

Tucker was born on December 19, 1869, near Birmingham, Alabama, and moved to Hall County in 1905. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Bessie Spruill, and Mrs. Jess Mitchell, both of Memphis; Mrs. W.L. Crabtree, Tulia; Mrs. Jack Garrett, Amarillo; Mrs. Charlie Glover, Sudan, and Mrs. Hayden Huckaby, Houston.

Three sons survive: Walter Tucker, Long Beach, California; Tom Tucker, Fontana, California; and Jack Tucker, Sudan.

A sister, Miss Nanna Tucker of Newlin, and a brother, D.H. Tucker of Wolffath [sic], also survive. Other survivors include 35 grandchildren.

His wife and two sons, Floyd and Dewey Tucker, preceded him in death.

Longtime Newlin Resident Buried Here Wednesday

Funeral services for George Washington Tucker, longtime prominent resident of Newlin, were held at the First Baptist Church at Newlin Friday at 3:30 p.m.

The 79-year-old retired farmer died suddenly in Amarillo Wednesday, August 24, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jack Garrett, 604 Pierce Street. His body was returned to Memphis late Wednesday.

Rev. Scott Crawford and Rev. Luther Crawford of the Newlin First Baptist Church conducted the services. They were assisted by Rev. A.V. Hendrix of Estelline.

Pallbearers were: Bill Crabtree, J.R. Mitchell, W.H. Spruill, Pete Tucker, Elmer Spruill, and Alton Huckabee.

Honorary pallbearers were: B.V. Spruill, J.C. Spruill and Roy Spruill.

Granddaughters were in charge of flowers. They were: Mesdames William Moss, Lonnie Widener, W.H. Reed and Larry McQueen, and Misses Sue Glover, Warren Crawford, Bessie Joe Spruill, Shirley Tucker and Peggy Mitchell.

Burial was in Fairview Cemetery here under the direction of Marcum Funeral Home.

Tucker was born near Birmingham, Ala., on December 9, 1869. He was married to Miss Della Moore on October 17, 1889. The family moved to Newlin in 1905 where they made their home since that time.

He had been a member of the First Baptist Church at Newlin since 1905.

Survivors include six daughters: Mrs. Bessie Spruill, Memphis; Mrs. W.L. Crabtree, Tulia; Mrs. Jess Mitchell, Memphis; Mrs. Jack Garrett, Amarillo; Mrs. Charlie Glover, Sudan, and Mrs. H.C. Huckabee, Houston.

Three sons survive: Tom Tucker, Fontana, Calif.; Walter Tucker, Long Beach, Calif.; and Jack Tucker, Sudan.

A sister, Nanna Tucker of Newlin, and a brother, D.H. Tucker of Wolfforth, also survive.

Other survivors include 33 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.

His wife and two sons, Floyd and Dewey Tucker, preceded him in death.
