David was one of 6 Winans brothers to fight in the Union Army.

David's military highlights:
October 11, 1862, enlisted as a Private in Co. D, 18th PA Cavalry.
June 29, 1863, KIA in a skirmish with Jeb Stuart's Calvary near Hanover, PA and was buried there. He was disinterred and reburied at the Gettysburg National Cemetery prior to Lincoln's dedication of the cemetery on November 19, 1863.

His brothers in the Union Army:
James (Co. C, 150th PA). July 1863, listed as MIA during the Battle of Gettysburg.

Jason (Co. D, 83rd PA) was KIA in Battle of Hatcher's Run, VA, Feb. 6, 1865.

John (Regiment is not known at this time) survived the war and died of natural causes on Mar. 16, 1917.

Samuel (Co. C, 169th PA) survived the war and died of natural causes on Apr. 8, 1917.

Chadwick (Co. C, 109th PA) survived the war and died of natural causes on Sep. 3, 1919.
