Mildred C. Blakely

Mrs. Mildred C. (Welch) Blakely, 94 of the Jeanne Jugan Residence, Newark, DE, passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2010.

Mrs. Blakely was born in Wilmington on November 11, 1915, daughter of the late Franklin and Agnes (Heaphy) Welch. She was employed as an office administrator with Bancroft Mills and was a member of the Diocesan Mother's Guild. A faithful and devoted Catholic, Mrs. Blakely was a former member of St. Paul's Parish, where she was a member of the BVM Sodality and Altar Guild, and a former member of Mary, Mother of Peace Parish, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. She enjoyed shuffleboard, arts and crafts, and possessed a great talent for crocheting.

Her husband of 54 years, Gerald R. Blakely, Sr., passed away on November 29, 1988; and her son, Franklin E. Blakely, passed away on December 18, 1994. Mrs. Blakely will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Robert T. and his wife, Rose Marie, Gerald J., Jr., Rev. Leonard J. and Donald M.; her daughters, Lorraine Zickefoose, Geraldine Davis and her husband, Robert, Bernadine Burkhard and Judith Ann Merrill; her daughter-in-law, Natalie Blakely; her 27 grandchildren; her 68 great grandchildren; and her 10 great great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Marie Welch; and nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the sisters and staff of the Jeanne Jugan Residence for the loving care and comfort given to Mildred.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 2431 Frazer Road, Newark on Tuesday, January 26, at 11 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Family and friends may visit at St. Margaret of Scotland Church on Monday, January 25 from 5 - 8 pm and on Tuesday, before Mass, from 10-10:45 am.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Mrs. Blakely to the Jeanne Jugan Residence, 185 Salem Church Rd., Newark, DE 19713.
