Rowland DuBois Robinson, 85, of Liberty, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at Reid Hospital in Richmond.

A son of the late William and Lucy DuBois Robinson, Rowland was born in Liberty on May 13, 1924. He was a graduate of the 1942 Liberty Short High School class. Because of spinal surgery after completing high school, he was classified a F4 and unable to serve in the military, but by 1944, was able to take a job constructing airplane wings at the former Design and Manufacturing in Connersville. In 1946 he and his father opened Robinson's Grocery on the corner of Union and Market Streets in Liberty. It was there he met his wife of 62 years, the former Helen Webster, whom he married on August 31, 1947. In 1955 after he purchased the VanAusdal Building on Market Street across from the Liberty Courthouse, he opened a used freight store, which by 1957 became what has been known in Liberty as Robinson's New and Used Furniture and Appliance Store. He sold the first television in Liberty, ran a toy store after purchasing the George Rose Building on the corner of Union and Market Streets, and developed an apartment complex within the same block of buildings. The "store" was a well-known gathering place of friends and where many problems of the world were discussed but not always solved. He loved the "store" and all those who passed through its doors. He never knew a stranger, or if he did there was always a piece of candy offered to produce a smile and start a conversation. Although his ill health prevented him from attending, he was a proud member of Edwards Memorial United Methodist Church for over eighty years. He was also a member of the Retail Merchant Association, Masonic Lodge # 58 in Liberty, Scottish Rite of the Whitewater Valley, and Scottish Rite of Indianapolis Valley.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife; two daughters: Linda Lafuze of Richmond; Dr. Tonya Robinson of Louisville, KY; a grandson and his wife: Nathan Lafuze and Becky of Boston; four nephews: Frank, Joe, Tony, and Chris Webster. He was blessed by the love, care and friendship of Susan West, Misty Rodefer, Mary Snyder, Marsh Pouder, Forest Hokey, and two very special friends, Trevor and Faith. Rowland loved and was loved by granddogs Izzy and Scarlette.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Franklin D. Webster.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, January 24, 2010 at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Fosdick Chapel, Liberty with Pastor Scott Bell of Edwards Memorial United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at College Corner Cemetery.
