Lieutenant (Junior Grade) W. G. Switzer, USN, was designated Naval Aviator #3114 in 1924. Graduated U.S. Naval Academy in 1920, Class of 1921 (one year early due to the World War).

During World War II, Captain Switzer was the commissionig commanding officer of the escort aircraft carrier USS TRIPOLI (CVE-64) and then later became CO of fleet carrier USS WASP (CV-18). Following the war held various commands, the last being as Commander Fleet Air Jacksonville, and following a 39-year naval career, retird in 1959 with the rank of Vice Admiral.
