Richard J Reed, 85 of Englewood, Florida died Wednesday, January 20, 2010 in the Clarview Nursing and Rehab Center, Sligo, PA.

He was born December 25, 1924 in Galesburg, Illinois and had been a Florida resident since 1985 moving from Vermilion.

Richard was a World War II veteran serving as a First Class Gunners Mate in both the Atlantic and Pacific. He worked as a service manager for Walker Dodge in Vermilion, later known as Dick Baker Dodge, and retired in 1983 after 25 years.

Dick had been a member of Vermilion Evangelical and Reformed Church, Ely Masonic Lodge # 424; Amvets Post # 22, American Legion Post $ 397 and VFW Post # 7576. He was past president of the Vermilion Booster Club; past patron of the Eastern Stars. He enjoyed building and racing race cars with the Pappas Club.

Survivors include his sons: Lawrence W, Dennis and Terrence Reed. Several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his wife of 47 years Ruth (Baumhardt) Reed; parents, Earl Martin and Ruby Reed; brother, Earl Reed and daughters-in-law, Roberta and Patricia Reed.

On December 29, 1995 Richard married Gladys DeHarpart Nelson in Florida and was stepfather to Glady's children from a former marriage: Winnie Jo (Nelson) Delacour, Lisa (Nelson) Stewart, Eric Nelson and Candace (Nelson) Bartlebaugh, inheriting several more grand and great grandchildren and was greatly loved by all of them.

Gladys died on January 18, 2010 and Richard passed away January 20, 2010. There was a combined funeral service for both Richard and Gladys at the Bish Memorial Funeral Home in New Bethlehem, Pa., the Rev. Dottie Kunselman officiating.

His body then was returned to Ohio where the Vermilion Veterans Council and Ely Masonic Lodge conducted services followed by a funeral officiated by Rev. Dr. Nick Cacciatore on January 26, 2010.

Interment following in Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion.
