The flame of earthly life for Gordon Doyle Arnold extinguished on June 28, 2006, at Hospice of Wichita Falls. Gordon Arnold lived for others - his family, his church, his friends and his country. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 30, 2006, at Fain Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Carswell, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park under the direction of Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home.
Gordon Arnold was born at Soper, Okla., on Dec. 2, 1916, to Clint and Lessie (Brannon) Arnold. Gordon graduated second in his class at Blossom High School, Blossom, Texas, in 1934 and attended Paris Junior College. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Emma Skidmore on July 14, 1935. They moved to Wichita Falls in 1938 where he began his career as a furniture upholsterer and refinisher. He opened his own business in 1948 where he and his wife Mary worked side by side until her death in 1992.
Mr. Arnold served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
He became a scoutmaster in 1946 and continued in scouting at Fain Church for 50 years. He attended Philmont Scout Ranch in 1961 and 1962. He was awarded the Silver Beaver in 1959 and Vigil Honor of the Order of the Arrow. He was also awarded the God and Service Recognition award by Fain.
At the age of 85, he was selected to carry the Olympic Torch for the 1992 Winter Olympics in Arlington, Texas, on Dec. 12, 2001.
In 1941, he and Mary joined the First Southern Presbyterian Church, which later became Fain Memorial Presbyterian Church. He served his church as youth advisor, scoutmaster, deacon, elder, and elder emeritus. He is known to the children of Fain as the " Gummie Bear" man.
In 1993, he became a Hospice of Wichita Falls volunteer where he is known as the " Candy Man." Along with his daughter and son, he was nominated by Hospice of Wichita Falls for the Jefferson Award.
Gordon Arnold is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Arnold; parents, Clint and Lessie Arnold; and two sisters, Margaret Arnold and Pauline Abbott.
Gordon is survived by sisters, Madelene McMeans of Madisonville, Texas, and Eugenia Booher of Ennis, Texas; sons, Marvin Arnold and wife Charlotte of Plano, Texas, and Allyn Arnold of Wichita Falls; daughters, Lucy Braddock and husband Glyn of Southlake, Texas, and Nancy Estes and husband James of Burkburnett; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and many close friends in his church and community.
