Richard C. Hawkins, age 95, Beverly Hills, died January 18, 2010, at Malcom Randall Veterans Hospital in Gainesville. Richard was born on August 31, 1914, in Waynesburg, PA to Ernest L. and Charlotte Addleman Hawkins. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, during which time he was captured as a Japanese prisoner of war for 3 1/2 years. After the United States surrender of the Philippines, he survived the Bataan death march. His life work was with S.C. Johnson's Wax Company as a sales representative. Richard retired and moved to Beverly Hills, Florida in 1985, where he enjoyed his life every day, golfing and just being happy. He was an inspiration to us all.
Survivors include his sisters and brother, Charlotte A. McCarrell, James F. Hawkins, Sara C. Roberts, Margaret H. Bower, daughter Caryl Jean Hawkins of Denver, Colorado; son and daughter-in-law, Richard E. Hawkins and Teresa T. Hawkins of Birmingham, Alabama, 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Sara S. Hawkins; brothers and sisters Joseph C. Hawkins, Earl L. Hawkins, Lena C. Hawkins, Virginia H. Harshman and J. Willis Hawkins.
Inurnment will be at a later date at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL where he will be placed next to his wife, Sara Hawkins. Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home is in charge of private arrangements.
