Eldest child of John R. Potter and Loretta Greene of New York. His family emigrated to Wisconsin around 1853 and settled in Green Lake County.
On Feb. 24, 1864 he enlisted with Company A, 36th WI Infantry, his regiment was organized at Camp Randall, Madison. They were at once sent to Spotsylvania where they were assigned to the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 2nd Corps. His regiment was engaged in many battles in Virginia including Totopotomy, Petersburg and Appomattox. They participated in the grand view at Washington and Hallett, who had sustained wounds, was mustered out with his regiment at Jeffersonville, Kentucky on July 12, 1865.
Upon his return home Hallett married, his wife's name was Francis. They were the parents of two children, Edgar and Agnes.
