Lemuel Brown, perhaps the oldest inhabitant of this region, died peacefully at the residence of his nephew, D.G. Brown, No. 4734 Greenwood avenue, Kenwood, late Saturday night, Dec. 29, 1883. The end was quiet and gradual, and the passing away of old age. His faculties were unimpaired until within a few days of his death, not withstanding that his days were much beyond the allotted three score years and ten of man. The funeral services were held Monday morning at his residence. The remains were taken to Graceland for interment.

Lemuel Brown was born in Cumberland, R.I., December 16, 1784, being consequently 99 years and 13 days of age at the time of his death. In the fall of 1832 he left Massachusetts for Chicago, being sent by the Government to take charge of the firearms of Fort Dearborn. He was delayed in Cleveland, Ohio, and made his way to Chicago by team during the winter. He arrived in Chicago in the spring of 1833, and with the exception of brief intervals, has resided here since that time. He has resided in Hyde Park for the last six years and has voted in every village and school election during his residence. He voted for every president but two, voting for the first time, though under age, by virtue of the ancient law providing that each freeholder to the extent of $400 was entitled to vote. He was a consistent Whig, and since the day of present political parties, a staunch Republican. He was an excellent steel temperer by trade, and worked at the forge until past 80 years of age.
