Mrs. Maria Phillips
Mrs. Maria Phillips, nee Judd, widow of Aaron Phillips died Monday, at her residence at 134 South Oxford street, from old age, after an illness of ten days. She was born at Ithaca, N.Y., May 26, 1824, the daughter of Reuben and Minerva Judd. She had been a resident of the Hill section of Brooklyn for fifty-six years and was one of the oldest members of the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Phillips is survived by a son, Dr. Otis Judd Eddy, of Washington, D.C.; a grandson, James W. Eddy, and a granddaughter, Lillian E. Eddy. She had been twice married. Her first husband, James Eddy, was one of the first telegraphers of this country and the general superintendent of the American Telegraph Company, and was associated with the late Cyrus Field and Peter Cooper in the laying of the first ocean cable. Mr. Phillips was a member of the New York Produce Exchange. Funeral services were held this afternoon, with the Rev. Dr. Cleland B. McAfee officiating and the interment is to be made at Ithaca.
