Whiteland's Oldest Citizen Passes Away

John W. McClain, Whiteland's oldest citizen, died Saturday at his home in Whiteland.

Mr. McClain was born in Johnson County and was 88 years old. He had lived in Whiteland for 54 years. He was the son of Moses and Sarah McClain, early pioneer settlers from Kentucky.

He is survived by three sons, James McClain, A.J. McClain of Whiteland, and Ora McClain of Indianapolis, and four daughters, Mrs. Mary Ellen Smithey, Mrs. Will Brunnemer, Mrs. Joe Drake of Whiteland, and Mrs. Herbert Smithey of Indianapolis, twenty grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was well known and highly respected citizen and his kind and gentle disposition had won him many friends. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the home at 10 o'clock and were in charge of Rev. Lee Andrews and the Rev. T.N. Hunt. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery.
