College Basketball Coach. As head coach at Gonzaga University from 1978 to 1981 and from 1985 to 1997, he guided the Bulldogs to their first NCAA Tournament appearance and helped the school achieve national recognition as a formidable program. He attended St. Ignatius High School (San Francisco), San Francisco State and Santa Clara Universities before beginning his coaching career at the high school level at Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) during the late 1960s. He was named California's High School Coach of the Year 1970. He reached the collegiate ranks as an assistant with Santa Clara University and later Gonzaga. In 1994, he guided Gonzaga to their first West Coast Conference Title and an appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). During his tenure, he compiled a 252 win 171 loss record and recruited NBA Hall of Fame guard John Stockton. In addition, he served as Gonzaga's Athletic Director. He died from a heart attack.
