Carl Cecil Cuckler, 83, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Monday, January 18, 2010. Born in Sophia, W.Va., on January 9, 1927, he was a son of the late Hallie McKinney and Basil Gilbert Cuckler. Also preceding him in death was his stepfather, James T. Wheeler; and his brother, John T. Wheeler. He was a sergeant in the United States Army, 989th Engineers Squadron, serving during World War II, and retired from the City of Roanoke with 36 years of service. A beloved husband, brother, father and grandfather, he always put his family first. He was always doing things for others and was known for his acts of kindness and his boisterous laugh. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Effie Milton Cuckler; daughter, Pamela Cuckler Sarver and her husband, Johnny; sons, Terry Lynn Cuckler and Steve Cuckler and his wife, Wilma; five grandchildren, Wayne and Shawna Rogers, Anne Lawhorn and fiance, John Robertson, Carla Sarver and fiance, Jayson Vermilye, Brian and Alicia Cuckler, and Jasmine and Mike Shell; eight great-grandchildren; and his sisters-in-law, Bonnie Wheeler and Cletie Fox. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2010, in the Roanoke Chapel of Lotz Funeral Home with nephew, the Rev. John Wheeler Jr., officiating. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 22, 2010, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family would like to thank Dr. William Ball and Dr. Steven Harris, and the staff and his caregivers at Pheasant Ridge Nursing Home, Unit 2. They would also like to thank his special caregivers in the home, his grandchildren, Anne Marie, Carla, Jasmine and Brian, and also Angie, Charmaine, Tamara, Dee, Max, John, Wanda and Jake.
