DALLAS (AP) – A Texas Tech University student from Kennewick, was shot death and a woman companion was wounded today by a pair of gunmen who abducted them from a Dallas nightclub, police said.
Police said the couple was marched to the muddy Trinity River bottoms around 1 a.m. where they were shot from behind by a pair of gunmen who stole their wallets.
The dead man was identified as Michael McMahan, 22, son of Mr. And Mrs. Mabry McMahan, 1005 West 27th Avene., who graduated from Kennewick High School in 1971.
McMahan was one of a 29 member student group attending a conference at the University of Texas-Arlington.
Police said his companion, Deia Karlene Sutton, 20 suffered a gunshot wound in the back of the neck. Police said she was released from Parkland Hospital after treatment, the bullet still lodged at the base of her skull.
Police said the young woman told them she and McMahan left a popular Dallas nightclub around 12:45 a.m. and were accosted by the two gunmen in the club parking lot.
Officers said the woman told them the muggers, armed with a pistol and a shotgun, forced them into McMahan's car and ordered him to drive to the river bottoms.
Miss Sutton said the gunmen forced them to walk to the river's edge and not turn around, police said, adding that at the moment two rapid shots were fired.
Police said Miss Sutton, related that after being shot, she slumped to the ground and "played dead."
McMahan suffered a fatal wound in the lower back, police said.
