Marje W. "Nana" Duffy
Marje, 94, passed away peacefully Friday, December 18, 2009; at the Bridge Assisted Care in Mount Vernon. She was born July 3, 1915, in Claremont, South Dakota. She was one of 7 children of James Arvid and Bertha (Litch) Holm. At the age of 8 the family moved to Seattle. Marje graduated from Cleveland High School in 1933 and from Edison Tech in Cosmetology. Marje married Richard "Dick" Duffy October 25, 1941 in Seattle. He preceded her in death in March 2003. The family moved to Point Roberts in 1948 and to Mount Vernon in 1950 where she has resided since. She opened Marje's Beauty Shop March 9, 1951 (next to the President Garage and Highland Pacific Dairy in Mount Vernon). She and Dick expanded the business and in 1955 opened Marje and Dick's Beauty Shop on north 4th street, in Mount Vernon, retiring in 1972. She was an active member of the following; Family Bible Fellowship, Skagit County Local #15 State and National Hairdressers Association, SPARC Board Member, Child Evangelism. She is survived by 2 sons; Jim ( Nancy) Duffy of Anacortes and Dick (Carol) Duffy of Mount Vernon; Grandsons, Jay ( Kathy) Duffy, Mike ( Debbie) Duffy, Jeff (Michelle) Kulin, Scott (Michelle) Kulin, Kirk (Stacy) Duffy, Lance (Jennifer) Anderson, Granddaughters; Shari (Yogi) Hall, Lori (Jeff) Hansell, Jill (Jeanette) Duffy, Kim Dixon, Suzanne (Doug) Knutsen, Krystal Kirkpatrick; numerous great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Donald Duffy, a daughter, Dixie Kulin, granddaughter, Kristin Duffy, 6 brothers and sisters. A special thank you to the loving and caring staff at the Bridge where Marje has resided since 2002 and to Skagit Hospice and Pastor Kevin Forquer as his visits and prayers allowed her to go in peace. Memorials are suggested to Skagit Hospice Foundation, PO Box 1376, Mount Vernon, WA 98274. Visitation will be at Hawthorne Funeral Home Wednesday, Dec. 23rd, 10:00 am until 5:00 pm, Thursday, Dec. 24th, 9:00 am until 12:00 pm and Sunday, Dec. 27th from noon until 5:00 pm. The funeral service will be Monday, December 28th at 11:00 am at Hawthorne Funeral Home Chapel; Pastor Kevin Forquer will be officiating. Entombment will be in the Hawthorne Memorial Park Mausoleum.
