After graduation from Rockwell City High School in 1910, she got her teacher's certificate and went to Carlyle, Faulk County, SD, to teach in a one-room school. She met my grandfather at Carlyle and after marrying they lived in nearby Norbeck, renting the Schrimpf farm. She also taught for a time at Elk Point, Union Co. , SD. (1915-I have the certificate. KG)

===========================

Nellie Marie Stacy was born August 7, 1892 in Calhoun County, Iowa, and passed to the great Beyond June 26, 1930 at 10:40 A.M.
In the Spring of 1910 she moved with her parents to Faulk County, S.D., where she was one of South Dakota's successful teachers.
On August 30, 1918 she was united in marriage to Clark J. Gebhard. To this union were born five children, three boys and two girls: Edith Belle, age 9 years; Dale Clark, age 6 years, Lois Ilene, age 4 years; Claire Dean, age 2 years and one son who died in infancy.
She united with the Methodist Church at Rockwell City, Iowa when she was sixteen years of age. On March 17, 1927 she united with the Methodist Church of Faulkton, S.D. by letter.
She was always very active in Christian work in her own community, having been the first superintendent of the Norbeck Sunday School and at the time of her death was superintendent of the Cradle Roll department and she will be greatly missed. She was also president of the Community Extension Club, and here, too, her presence and activity will be missed. She always gave of herself in everything she undertook and because of this, the loss of her presence and activity will be felt in the whole community
Besides her immediate family she leaves to mourn her loss, her father, three brothers, one sister and a host of friends.
The funeral service was held on Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church in Faulkton. Rev. W. Ralph Eddy of Norbeck was in charge of the service, assisted by Rev. Howard Rice of Faulkton. The mixed quartet of the Norbeck Baptist church rendered excellent music. Interment was in the Faulkton cemetery.

==================================

She seems to not be enumerated in the 1910 census; her parents and three siblings are living in Enterprise Township, Faulk Co., SD on 12 May 1910, in or close to Carlyle. Nellie's graduation was May 26, perhaps she was staying with a friend or relative in Iowa until then.

NOTE- Her Rockwell City High School yearbook, "The Comet" was published for the first time in 1910. The previous graduating class photos were included. As there was likely not time to have the 1910 class photos included by press time baby photos were printed of them. The Comet was named for Halley's Comet which appeared that year.

===========================

Cause of death was diabetes; she knew she had the disease as several books on it were later found in her effects. Neighbor Doris Adams drove her to the hospital and later stated there was a sweet smell emanating from her. (Some individuals with untreated diabetes can develop a fruity odor, most prominent on the breath, that is caused by the production of certain chemicals called ketones, in response to the prolonged elevation of blood sugar.)

NOTE: She was known as "Doll" to many Iowa relatives- her nickname shortly after birth.

==============================

Family lore has it that her younger sister, Elsie Belle, had died of diabetes as well at age 12. But I've been told that childhood diabetes and adult-onset diabetes almost certainly do not happen in the same family. I do not recall where this information came from. KG
