Nelle Eliza (Derrick) Bownds was the daughter of James Washington & Annie Louraine (Ogg) Derrick.

Despite Nelle's father discouraging her going to college, she graduated in 1912 from Baylor Female College. It was the female department of what is now Baylor University, the oldest operating college in Texas, chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas.

She later received her master's degree from The University of Houston.

Nelle married William Aubrey Bownds,Sr. in 1916.

She began her teaching in a one room school, Liberty School, in Lee County, arriving on a horse with her infant son in tow. She later taught in the Houston School district and taught for school for fifty years. She retired from teaching in 1967 and moved with her husband back to their farm in Lexington, Texas.

Nelle and William Aubrey had three sons; William Aubrey Bownds, Jr., Derek Coleman Bownds and Royce Townsend Bownds.

Nelle passed away in Lexington, Lee County, Texas.

SIDNEY TAYLOR MILLHOLLAND (DERRICK, KILGORE)(1843-1917) - was born in Missouri. She went to California with a 175 Wagon Train with her family, her father was the Wagon Captain. During the Civil War she tended her little daughters and cared for the farm while her husband was fighting in the Civil War. She died in Texas. (There is an article in the 3 Oct. 1927, Progressive Farmer, titled "Attention All Old Timers", which tells stories of Sidney Millholland).

JAMES OGG (1840-1912) - was born in Georgia. He was a farmer and Confederate States Soldier in Debray's Brigade. He was also a Constable for Grimes County, Texas.
ELIZA HEFLIN (1843-1901) - was born in Alabama and died in Texas. Eliza and her family were living in Texas when it was the Texas Republic. Her headstone inscription "She was a kind wife and a Christian mother"
