Rosary will be Sunday, January 24, 2010; 7:30 P.M. at Livingston-Butler-Volland Funeral Home Chapel, Hastings, and Memorial Mass will be Monday, January 25, 2010; 11:00 A.M. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, Hastings with Father Andrew Heaslip officiating. There will be a private family burial in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Sunday, January 24, 2010; 1:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M. with family present at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva. Memorials may be given to Hastings Community Foundation or Hastings Catholic School's Trust.
Virginia was born on December 2, 1927 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Joseph & Irene (Ryan) Kellison. After attending Blessed Sacrament Grade School she graduated in 1945 from Lincoln High. Virginia attended Barat College of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, Illinois and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. In September of 1948 she married Gerald T. Whelan and moved to Hastings. The Whelans had four children, Christine, Margaret, Daniel, and Gerald Jr. Virginia also enjoyed playing bridge, golf, and traveling with friends and family. She spent many hours attending the grandkids' sports and music activities. Virginia was a housewife for many years and then was a giftshop buyer for Mary Lanning Hospital from 1979 to 1993. Virginia was active in numerous organizations and institutions in her community and state: Nebraska Unicameral Wives Club; Red Cross Board of Directors; State Library Commission; Hastings Public Library Board, past president; Hastings Public Library Foundation, board member and past president; Mary Lanning Hospital Auxiliary, member and past president; Sunnyside Retirement Home Board of Directors, member and treasurer; Big Brothers-Big Sisters, past president; and Fisher Fountain Renovation and Rebuilding Committee member. Virginia was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and Altar Society. She is remembered and loved by family and friends as a kind and generous person with style and grace.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Larry; sister, Kathryn; and her husband, Gerald T. Whelan in 1993.
