Joseph Ives came from Connecticut to settle in Hatley as part of the Ebnenezer Hovey and Henry Cull party in 1797. His brothers, Joel Hall Ives and Eli Ives were also members of the party. They were the sons of John Ives (b. July 1729) and Mary Hall Ives of Wallingford, New Haven County, Connecticut. Joseph was accompanied by his wife, Clarissa Hall Ives and perhaps his two eldest children, Harley (b. 1792) and Jospeph 3rd (b. 1796). He was a successful farmer and built a large brick house that was still standing in 1950.
