At a very young age, Josiah became quite ill with a high fever, after which he lost his hearing. Although his father took him to the best doctors in Chicago at the time, there was nothing that could be done to restore it and he was deaf the rest of his life. He received his education in Austin, TX at the "Texas School for the Education of the Deaf." His business was in the repairing of tires and tubes on cars and trucks until tubeless tires came into being. He later had a work shop at home where he repaired bicycles and restored, repaired and painted furniture.
