OBITUARY from the 2 May 1970 MODESTO BEE newspaper--CERES AREA CRASH CLAIMS 2 TEEN BOYS - John Franklin Brockman, 19 of Ceres and William Henry Boyd, 18, address unknown, were killed when their car ran a stop sign at Hatch Road and Richland Avenue early yesterday. The California Highway Patrol said the 3:35 a.m. collision tore Brockman's car nearly in half. The youths were thrown about 50 feet. They probably died instantly, officers said. Brockman's vehicle was traveling south on Richland Avenue at a high rate of speed and started to stop at the Hatch Raod sign the CHP said. A vehicle driven by Robert Oscar McLaughlin, 26, of Coyama, Santa Barbara County, was heading east on Hatch about 65 miles per hour, according to the CHP report. Mr. Laughlin said he saw Brockman's headlights through the trees of an orchard just before the accident, but could not stop. His vehicle struck Brockman's near the rear door. The spinning Brockman car hit a stop sign, a fence and finally a large tree, the CHP said. The McLaughlin car also sustained major damage. McLaughlin was not cited. McLaughlin was not injured and his passenger, Wayne W. Snead, 27, of 2404 Lilac St., Ceres was released after treatment at Scenic General Hospital for minor injuries. Services for both youths are pending at the Franklin and Downs Funeral Home in Modesto. As of last evening, Boyd's family had not been located. Brockman, a poultry farm employee, is survived by his widow, Deborah, his mother, Dorothy Norton of Ceres, his father Jack Brockman of Missouri and his brother, Fred Brockman of Texas. He attended Downey High School in Modesto and was a member of the Church of Christ. He was born in Missouri and had lived in the Modesto area nine years.
