Martha was the daughter of Wilburn and Mary Ann Davidson Phelps. She married Thomas Jefferson White in DeSoto County, Mississippi in January, 1851.

Martha's obituary was published in the Gonzales Inquirer on April 30, 1900 (thank you to Cindy S. Munson for finding this and submitting it for publication here):

" Died, at the family residence in Gonzales, Texas on Sunday, April 29, 1900, at 3:30 o'clock p.m., Mrs. T. J. White in her 70th year.

The funeral services will be held this evening at 4:30 o'clock at the family residence, after which the procession will move to the Masonic cemetery, where the interment will take place.

Mrs. White has been in delicate health for some time and her death was not unexpected. She was surrounded by all her children during the last few days of her illness.

Mrs. White was a noble Christian woman and was true to every demand of life and every duty. She was kind and generous to neighbors, friends or stranger that came within her sphere, and no one knew Mrs. White but to respect and admire her.

A host of friends will sympathize with the aged husband and children in their sorrow."
