Barbara was the daughter of George A. Schmidt and Anna M. Gassen. She married Joseph Formanack in October of 1874, and she and Joseph had five children. They lived first in Wahpeton,Richland County, N. Dakota, and moved to Howard, S. Dakota, in the mid-1880s. She and Joseph retired to Los Angeles,California, in about 1918.
