Pritchett was educated at Pritchett Institute in Glasgow, Missouri (founded in 1866 and named in honor of his uncle, Carr Waller Pritchett).

He married Lenora Melissa Evans in Gildewell, Missouri in 1882. They had eight children.

He taught briefly in San Marcos, Texas before joining the faculty of Sam Houston Normal Institute (now State University) as Professor of Mathematics; in 1908 "Professor Joe" was named Dean of Men and went on to have a 42-year career at SHNI.

Pritchett owned much of the property west of the university, including the area that is now Pritchett Field, the original university athletic fields. The Pritchett family house at 1322 Avenue O – named Oak Grove – was built in 1892 and remained in the Pritchett family until 1945. It was named a Texas Historic Landmark in 2001.

He was the younger brother of former university president Henry Carr Pritchett
