Cory James Simmons 28, of Alexandria Va., formerly of Midland passed away Monday, January 11, 2010 at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. after a short battle with cancer. Cory was born October 21, 1981 in Midland, TX. to Mark and Cheryl Simmons. Cory graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 2000. Cory was active in Sports playing football, pitching in Little League and played Varsity Basketball. Cory won various 3 point competitions. Cory enlisted in the United States Navy in 2004 serving four years. One of his many honors was to serve security detail for President George W. Bush at the commencement speech at the Naval Academy. At the time of his death, Cory served as a Training and Certification Officer. Cory was in charge of training and certifying Naval personal in order to support operations worldwide. He loved his work, his fellow employees and the Virginia area. Cory left a smile with everyone he met. He was the pride and joy of his family not only because of his accomplishments, but also his limitless jokes, pranks and laughter. He loved life to the fullest. Cory taught us bravery even in the face of death. He was an avid sports fan and a big supporter of the Dallas Cowboys. Cory lived to see "His" Cowboys win the NFC East just a few days before his death. He had a heart of gold and loved his family and his country deeply. Cory's mischievous grin will always remain in our hearts. He always had a kind spirit with a twinkle in his eye. Cory was preceded in death by his Grandfather, Ben R. Simmons and cousin, Jordan Simmons. Cory will be sorely missed by his parents, Mark and Cheryl Simmons; brother and wife Brady and Tori Simmons; sister, Jenny Simmons; Grandparents, Clint and Linda Reed of Brownwood; and Alice Simmons of Midland; Cory is also survived by his nieces and nephew Brianna, Madison and Zack Simmons; Aunts and Uncles, Julie Reed; Bill and Anna Reed; Matt and Sharla Simmons; Bob and Ann Gill of Blackwell, TX; and numerous cousins, family and devoted friends. The family will receive friends at Ellis Funeral Home, Tuesday, January 19, 2010 between the hours of 6:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Golf Course Road Church of Christ with Tim Baugh officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home. Condolences may be offered at www.ellisfunerals.com. Pallbearers will be, Michael Williams, Scott Stone, Andrew Hart, and Joey Hart of Midland; Todd D' Anbrea and Bret Quick of Alexandria Va.
