The 1850 U.S. Census listed John Bonsor, 12, years old, living with his parents, William J., 40, a farmer, and mother, Lucy, 40, and four siblings, all born in England. John enlisted at 22 years of age, for a 3-year term of service in Company K, 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. While delivering a dispatch to a steamer at Gallipolis, Ohio he fell in the Ohio River and drowned, December 15, 1863. Rank: Private.
His name is incorrectly spelled "Bonser" on the monument of the 23rd Regiment, in Cleveland, Ohio. His name was also misspelled as "Bronson," Bowser," and "Bouser" on different records.
