Seth Lewelling was born on 06 Mar 1820 in Randolph County, North Carolina. He was the sixth of eight living children of Mesheck Lewelling and Jane Brookshire. As a baby he traveled by wagon train with his family and group of abolitionist Quakers from North Carolina to Henry County, Indiana, where Seth grew to manhood. In addition to
working in his father's orchards, Seth learned to be a cobbler. He married Clarissa Hosier on 29 Feb 1844 in Newcastle, Henry County, Indiana. Seth and Clarissa did not get married in the Duck Creek Monthly (Quaker) Meeting (of which they were both members), but after a public condemnation for their "misdeed" it appears all was forgiven with the Meeting.

In 1850 Seth left Indiana and walked to the gold fields in California with his older brother, John. After a few unsuccessful months of hard work mining, John and Seth traveled to Oregon to the fruit tree nursery established by their older brother, Henderson, in Milwaukie, Oregon. Seth remained there the rest of his life.

In 1852 Seth's family traveled to Oregon with Henderson as he was returning from nursery-stock buying trip to New York. Both Henderson and John eventually settled in the area of Oakland, California, but Seth remained with a nursery in Milwaukee, and he was successful. He developed new varieties of several different fruits, and he was a
leader in the new fruit industry in Oregon.

Seth also was involved in Oregon politics. He was a leader in establishing initiative and referendum laws in Oregon (the I&R Movement), and he was a leader and financier of the Oregon Populist Party.

In 1882 his wife, Clarissa, died, and Seth married Sophronia Vaugh on 31 Mar 1885. He was 65 and Sophronia was 31 when they married.

While Seth's brother, Henderson, used various spellings of their family name (Luelling/Lewelling), Seth only used the "Luelling" spelling for a time and in certain situations (such as advertisements in the Oregonian newspaper). Most of his life he spelled his name "Lewelling."

Seth died in Milwaukie, Clackamas County, Oregon, on 20 Feb 1896 at the age of 75.

Florence Olson Ledding (daughter of Sophronia, and who knew Seth from when she was age 6, and moved into his house when she was age 15) remembers Seth as "the kindest person she ever met."
